Work week off to mild, sunny start

A mild morning should lead to plenty of sunshine this afternoon, starting a pattern that should hold up to almost the end of week.

“Today we’re heading into the low 80s, and tomorrow we should be even with that 90-degree mark,” Jennifer Schack, 6News meteorologist, said. “Very warm air here for the first half of the week.”

Today’s high is expected to hit 82, with winds at 8 to 15 mph. The average high for this date is 75.

At 7 a.m., the skies were mostly sunny and the temperature in downtown Lawrence was 56, with a southeast 6-mph wind, Schack said.

A cold front sliding across the state should switch the winds to the west and help keep showers away from the area for the next couple of days.

“It’s so weak that by tomorrow it dissipates and turns into just a stationary front,” she said. “The precipitation stays on the north side of it, up toward Nebraska.”

Tonight should be quiet and mild, with a low of 59 and winds at 3 to 8 mph.

Tuesday could see a record high, but the rest of the week should back off into the 80s and 70s.

“I do think we hit 90 for Tuesday, but it’s the only 90 in the extended forecast,” Schack said.
