Investigation

Police charge suspect with robbing store

A Lawrence man has been formally charged in connection with a robbery at a convenience store during the weekend.

Prosecutors on Monday filed one charge of aggravated robbery against Dequanus T. Wilson, 28. Wilson is charged with robbing Kwik Shop, 1724 W. 23rd St, about 2:30 a.m. Saturday.

A store clerk told police the suspect pulled a handgun out of his waistband and robbed him of cash from the register.

At his first court appearance, however, Wilson said the gun was an air gun, not a real handgun.

Judge Pro Tem Peggy Kittel set his bond at $30,000 and set his next court date for Thursday.

Supreme Court

School finance case to air on Internet

Topeka — Oral arguments in the school finance lawsuit before the Kansas Supreme Court will be made available live over the Internet.

The arguments are scheduled to start at 9:30 a.m. May 11 and can be accessed at www.kscourts.org and www.kanedlive.org.

The court is considering the Legislature’s new school finance bill that will increase funding by $142 million and allow local property tax increases.

In January, the court ruled school funding was inadequate and distributed unfairly.

KPTS public television out of Wichita will videotape the arguments and broadcast a half-hour production May 13-15 on public television stations.
