Lawrence sets another frosty low temperature record

If you looked out the window early this morning, just after sunrise, it seemed like a nice warm spring day. But if you stepped outside, you found the cold truth — a record-breaking low temperature of 26 degrees.

“It’s one of those mornings that looks beautiful, but it’s also kind of cool out,” said Jennifer Schack, 6News meteorologist. The average low for this date is 52. The old record low for this date was 31, set in 1976 and tied in 2004.

It was the second day in a row that Lawrence dipped into the mid 20s, starting the morning with frost advisories throughout northeast Kansas. But sunny skies were sending the thermometer readings up quickly.

By 8:30 a.m., the temperatures had risen to 39 degrees, with a northwesterly wind making the wind chill 33 degrees.

Sunny skies will continue through the morning, with some clouds moving in this afternoon, as the temperature rises today to a high of 63 degrees, Schack said. The winds will be out of the northwest from 5 to 10 mph.

“Today, we’re about 10 degrees shy of average,” Schack said. The average high temperature for this date is 73 degrees.

Overnight, the temperature will fall to a low of 37 degrees by early Wednesday morning.

Wednesday’s skies will be partly cloudy, with the high reaching 69 and winds southwesterly 12 to 18 mph, gusting to 25 mph, she said.

Thursday morning’s low will be 43, with the high climbing to 73 under partly cloudy skies.
