Sundae fund-raiser sweet deal for CASA

Sunday afternoon was a good time to sit back in the park and enjoy ice cream sundaes. More than 250 people couldn’t have been wrong.

That’s how many showed up at Buford M. Watson Jr. Park for May Day Sundaes, an event for the benefit of Douglas County Court Appointed Special Advocates.

Organized by Kappa Alpha Theta sorority, the event raised $641, sorority members said.

“It’s been a really good Sunday afternoon to be out with family and friends,” said Sarah Edgar, a Kansas University sophomore from Leawood and a sorority member. “Several families have stopped by while they were walking around the park.”

About two hours of music was provided by the Mark Lyda Combo while the sorority sold sundaes to raise the money for the nonprofit organization.

CASA is a group of volunteers trained to be advocates for children who have been abused and neglected and are under protection of the juvenile court. They meet with the children, talk to the family, review records and monitor compliance with the courts’ orders.

Meryl Miller, philanthropy chairwoman for the sorority, said her involvement with the fund-raiser had raised her interest in possibly becoming a CASA volunteer.

“I think it’s just a really great thing to do,” said the KU junior from Bonner Springs. “I think they (volunteers) want to influence a child by helping them have some of the good experiences that they had.”

In 2004 Douglas County CASA served 91 children with the aid of 70 volunteers.

The organization was established in 1991.
