Flaky spring break

Steady snow fell in Lawrence Tuesday afternoon, as a woman strolled along Jayhawk Boulevard on the Kansas University campus. The snow lasted less than an hour, and when it was over you couldn’t tell the city had received anything but rain.

“Briefly, we had some slushy areas, like on cars,” said Matt Sayers, 6News meteorologist.

The snow quickly melted, and it wasn’t measurable, Sayers said. Rain moved into the Lawrence area Monday evening and by about 5 p.m. Tuesday three-quarters of an inch had fallen during the 24-hour period, Sayers said. Today should be dry.

Temperatures in Lawrence Tuesday hovered in the upper 30s to 40.

The snow was confined to northeastern Kansas, and there was no significant measurement anywhere, according to the National Weather Service in Topeka. It’s not unusual for Lawrence to have snow in late March, Sayers said.

“We can have snow as late as the second week in April,” he said.
