So far the best recent Hollywood remake of a Japanese film is “The Ring.” And the horror effort proved successful enough that it warranted a tepid sequel. “The Ring Two” finds the intrepid reporter played by Naomi Watts moving to a small town to escape the memories of evil bad seed Samara and her cursed videotape. But when Watts’ son begins acting funny, she deduces Samara may be trying to resurrect herself through the boy.

Also opening is “Ice Princess” — a kind of “Princess Diaries” on skates. Michelle Trachtenberg stars as a science geek whose physics experiment reveals her talent for skating. Then her life becomes a struggle between what her strong-willed mother and her abrasive coach see as her future.

At the art house is “The Sea Inside,” a biopic that won this year’s Oscar for Foreign Language Film. Javier Bardem portrays Ramon Sampedro, a Spaniard who became a quadriplegic after a diving accident and for the next 29 years waged a war for the right to die.
