Wee bit windy for St. Patrick’s Day

If you’re headed out to Lawrence’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade this afternoon, hang tight to your green hats and shore up your shamrocks and shillelaghs.

“It’s going to be a wee bit windy out there,” said Jennifer Schack, 6News meteorologist.

The temperature at the time the parade starts at 1 p.m. in South Park will be 60, with southwesterly winds 20-25 mph, gusting up to near gale-like 30 mph, Schack said. The parade will travel with the wind north along Massachusetts Street, across the Kansas River Bridge to near Ninth and Locust in North Lawrence. It will be shown live on Sunflower Broadband’s Channel 6.

“I know St. Patrick’s Day is supposed to be green, but look at all the blue out there,” Schack said this morning. Skies were clear and sunny at 8:40 a.m., with the temperature at 43 degrees and a southwest 12-mph wind making the wind chill 37 degrees.

Temperatures will climb above the average of 58 for this date to 65 degrees by late this afternoon, Schack said. High clouds will move in during the afternoon.

Overnight, the temperature will drop to 40 by early Friday morning with south winds 10-20. As the cold front arrives, There’s also a chance for a few sprinkles overnight through Friday morning, Schack said.

Friday’s skies will be partly cloudy, with Friday afternoon’s temperatures climbing to a high of 58. Winds will shift after the noon hour Friday, coming in from the northwest at 10-15 mph.

Saturday’s morning low will be 28. Saturday’s skies will be partly cloudy, with the afternoon high climbing to 51.
