Exhibit to feature book cover designs

Graphic design students, professional designers and book lovers soon will have a chance to view award-winning book and jacket designs from some of the nation’s most well-known scholarly presses.

A traveling exhibit featuring winners of the 2004 Association of American University Presses Book, Jacket and Journal Show will be on display from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through March 24 at the University Press of Kansas, 2502 Westbrooke Circle. The exhibit is free and open to the public.

Visitors can open and study the displayed books to examine the quality of their design and book crafting, and they will receive a free copy of the show catalog containing design specifications and jurors’ comments.

The 2004 exhibit features 43 books, 29 jackets and covers, and one journal. For judging purposes, the books were divided into categories of typographic, illustrated, poetry and literature, and reference. Winners were selected from 309 books, 348 jackets and covers, and eight journals published in 2003 that were submitted by university presses. Judges chose books for superior layout of typography or illustration; jackets and journals were judged for outstanding overall design.
