Prof discusses evolution, creationism
Science supports the theory of evolution while at the same time evolution is consistent with an orthodox theory of creation, according to a Kansas State University professor.
“I’m always amazed about how God works, and that’s what is exciting to me,” said Keith Miller, professor of geology and editor of a book called “Perspectives on an Evolving Creation,” which is a compilation of essays on the interaction between Christian faith and evolutionary theory.
Miller spoke to about 15 people during an appearance Sunday evening at Plymouth Congregational Church, 925 Vt.
Miller outlined what science knows about the theory of evolution, noting similarities as well as gaps between the evolution of fish and tetrapods (similar to amphibians) and birds and dinosaurs, among others. Fossil evidence is consistent with a common descent, he said. Miller also talked about the evidence of human evolution.
Miller maintained that evolution is “simply a scientific description of God’s creative activities.”
Yet science by itself cannot prove there is a God, he said. Science doesn’t deal in proof, but instead is a continuation of theories that tie facts together, he said.
“Evolution is extremely powerful because it ties so many facts together,” Miller said.
God’s power and presence can be found in his creations, Miller said.
“Ultimately, as Christians, God’s character is revealed in the person and character of Jesus Christ,” Miller said.
