It’s been a decade since John Travolta first took on the role of Chili Palmer in “Get Shorty.” But he’s back in “Be Cool,” a sequel also based on the writings of Elmore Leonard. This time Travolta’s former mobster has grown disenchanted with his success in the movie industry and seeks a career in the even more cutthroat world of pop music.

Also opening this week is “The Jacket.” Adrien Brody portrays a Gulf War veteran who believes he’s traveling in time while undergoing experimental treatments at a mental institution.

Vin Diesel tries his hand at family oriented comedy in “The Pacifier.” The muscular star plays a Navy S.E.A.L. who is assigned to shape up a family of five unruly kids with his militaristic rules.

And at the art house the Oscar-nominated “Vera Drake” debuts. The drama showcases best actress nominee Imelda Staunton as a philanthropic housewife in post-World War II England whose beliefs lead to tragedy for her family.
