KU identifies man found in apartment

The body discovered Tuesday in a Lawrence apartment has been identified as that of a 29-year-old Kansas University student.

KU officials identified the man as Yihong Zhu, a doctoral student in molecular biosciences from China.

Zhu’s body was found Tuesday by Lawrence Police officers at Meadowbrook Apartments, UU Brittany Place. Managers of the Meadowbrook Apartments called police to check on the welfare of Zhu, who had not been seen for days and had not paid his rent for June.

In May, Zhu had informed professors and staff members at KU that he was returning to China to address a health problem.

Eudoran loses money in financial scam

An actual check for $4,607 led to a Eudora man being scammed out of $4,165. The incident happened between May 22 and June 9 and was reported to the Lawrence Police Department earlier this week.

Lawrence Police Capt. David Cobb said a 50-year-old man received a check worth $4,607 in the mail. A letter accompanying the check stated that the man was approved to receive $750,000. He was instructed to wire money to a location in Michigan, Cobb said.

Bank employees verified the check was valid and the man deposited it. The man then wired the money as instructed. “As soon as that happened, a stop payment was placed on the check,” Cobb said.

According to a police report, the man lost $4,165.

LMH board gives president a raise

Lawrence Memorial Hospital Board of Trustee members unanimously agreed Wednesday to give LMH President and CEO Gene Meyer a 5 percent raise.

The increase, which came as part of Meyer’s annual evaluation, raises his salary to $268,000 per year.

Donna Osness, chair of the LMH board, said that board members were impressed with the number of positive reviews and accreditation reports that the hospital had received in the last year. Meyer also was given high marks for recruiting new physicians and keeping employee turnover below industry averages.

Deborah Thompson, vice president of human resources for the hospital, said the raise also brought Meyer’s salary in line with salaries for CEOs at similar-sized hospitals.
