Treasurer Jenkins not running for governor

? Add State Treasurer Lynn Jenkins to the list of Republicans who will not be running for governor.

Jenkins of Topeka has issued a news release saying she will not be candidate in the 2006 GOP primary for governor, but instead will seek re-election to her current job.

She said a gubernatorial run would take too much time away from her family.

So far, House Speaker Doug Mays, R-Topeka, is the only announced candidate to challenge Gov. Kathleen Sebelius, a Democrat who is expected to seek re-election .

Other Republicans, including U.S. Sam Brownback, Atty. Gen. Phill Kline, U.S. Rep. Jim Ryun and Secretary of State Ron Thornburgh had been considered possible candidates, but each has said they will not seek the state’s top executive job at this time.

U.S. Rep. Jerry Moran of Hays was considered a top GOP contender. He told party officials that he would not seek the nomination, but recently said he is reconsidering.

State Senate Majority Leader Derek Schmidt of Independence has said he also is considering running for governor in the Republican primary.
