Engineering students place third in contest

A team of 12 Kansas University engineering students recently took third in the Society of Automotive Engineers Aero Design West competition.

The students received $500 and a plaque in a competition that centered around a radio-controlled aircraft capable of carrying large amounts of weight.

The students had to design, build and fly the plane and give a written report and presentation. Standings were based on how much weight the planes could carry and how well the students did in their paper and presentation.

The competition was April 22-24 in Fort Worth, Texas.

KU student named Boren Scholar

A sophomore at Kansas University has been named a 2005 David L. Boren Undergraduate Scholar by the National Security Education Program.

Jay M. Kimmel is the 37th KU student to receive the award since its inception in 1994. The scholarships provide funding for undergraduate and graduate study for students who plan to work in federal national security.

Kimmel plans to study at a central Asian country during the 2005-06 school year. He’s majoring in political science and international studies, and has taken courses in Turkish and Uyghur at KU.
