Newborn left inside bag hanging on fence rescued

? A newborn baby was rescued from a plastic shopping bag hanging over a chain-link fence in Brooklyn early Friday, and one of her saviors says she’d like to try to adopt her.

The newborn, no more than 3 or 4 days old, was taken to The Brookdale University Hospital and Medical Center and listed in stable condition.

Police, meanwhile, canvassed the neighborhood in search of clues to her origins.

“Somebody can’t just leave a baby like that. The mother shouldn’t just be put in jail, but under the jail,” said Hushiya Frazier, a neighbor who saw the infant before the ambulance took her away.

Police and city officials have long urged parents to leave unwanted babies at legal safe havens such as hospitals, police stations or firehouses, assuring them that no questions will be asked.

Even so, infants are still found abandoned from time to time, not all of them as lucky as the latest.

Within sight of the lot where the baby was left loomed a billboard with the phrase “God Bless Our Children” printed in bold, black letters.
