Film series features Abbot and Costello

Perhaps best remembered for their “Who’s on First?” routine, Bud Abbott and Lou Costello were one of the premier comedy teams of the 1940s. The duo’s first starring role was in 1941’s “Buck Privates,” a major hit and financial success. They went on to appear in nearly 50 films, as well as on their own radio and television shows.

Abbot and Costello were inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in recognition of their most famous routine and were the only non-baseball playing celebrities to be so honored.

The Lawrence Public Library, 707 Vt., will show four Abbot and Costello films on Fridays in July. Screenings are at 7 p.m.

¢ “Buck Privates” (1941), July 8

¢ “The Naughty Nineties” (1945), July 15

¢ “Mexican Hayride” (1948), July 22

¢ “A. and C. Meet Frankenstein” (1948), July 29

All films are free and open to the public. Popcorn will be provided, and guests are welcome to bring a beverage.

Gallery displays work of former KU dean

Fields Gallery, 712 Mass., is now carrying the photographic work of artist Peter Thompson.

Thompson, former art professor and dean of Kansas University’s School of Fine Arts, takes photographs that focus on often unnoticed moments of simple beauty. Through his lens, a sponge and its bubbles or a sweep of clouds become both actual and abstract. Thompson finds possibility in the mundane and composition hidden within the shadows and reflections of everyday life.

The gallery’s summer hours are 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday and noon-5 p.m. Sunday.
