Senate roll call on narrowing marriage amendment

? The 28-11 vote Thursday by which the Senate rejected a proposal to narrow a proposed amendment to the Kansas Constitution to ban same-sex marriage.

The proposed change in the measure would have deleted a section declaring that only a marriage between one man and one woman be entitled to the benefits normally associated with marriage.

The change would have permitted the state to allow civil unions or grant other forms of legal recognition to gay relationships and limited the constitutional amendment to restating the state’s existing, traditional definition of marriage.

A “yes” vote was a vote for a narrower constitutional change. A “no” vote preserved language banning civil unions.

Of the 30 Republicans, four voted “yes,” 25 voted “no” and one was absent.

Of the 10 Democrats, seven voted “yes” and three 3 voted “no.”
