Pair ordered to trial in attempted poisoning case

? A Wyandotte County couple charged with trying to kill the mayor of Edwardsville and her family with tainted cupcakes and soft drinks will stand trial after pleading not guilty.

Donna Ozuna-Trout, 47, and Ralph Trout, 57, each face one count each of attempted first degree murder. The Trouts are accused of mailing a two-liter bottle of root beer and baked goods laced with lethal levels of antifreeze and lye to the home of Mayor Stephanie Eickhoff, their next-door neighbor.

A Wyandotte County judge ruled Wednesday that there was enough evidence to try the couple.

Ozuna-Trout has said she thinks Eickhoff concocted the poisoning scheme and then planted evidence in Ozuna-Trout’s garbage as part of an ongoing feud. She said the families didn’t get along because she is a minority while her husband is white — a claim Eickhoff has called ridiculous.

The Eickhoffs filed a lawsuit in 2002 accusing Ozuna-Trout of falsely accusing them of child neglect in a report to the Kansas Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services. That suit was dismissed in February 2003.

A few months later, the Eickhoffs filed a claim in civil court accusing Ozuna-Trout of repeatedly making throat-slashing gestures with her hand.
