Weather delays GlobalFlyer launch

Salina — Weather conditions have again delayed the GlobalFlyer take-off from Salina, officials there announced Tuesday.

Steve Fossett had planned to attempt the world’s first solo, around-the-world, nonstop flight this weekend, with a launch from Salina Regional Airport. But weather data gathered Tuesday showed “unacceptable ground winds at Salina airport and turbulence during Steve’s ascent.”

“What a disappointment,” Fossett said in an e-mail sent to crew members working on the flight. “As eager as I am to start this flight, everything must be right.”

The flight has been delayed several times since early January, when it was first scheduled.

The next possible window of opportunity will be March 1-3, said representatives of Virgin Atlantic, which is sponsoring the world record attempt.

Complaints filed against fraternity

Kansas University filed a complaint Tuesday against a fraternity where Lawrence Police staged a weekend raid, confiscating 16 beer kegs.

The Interfraternity Council is expected to set a hearing on the matter and notify the fraternity, Phi Kappa Theta, when the hearing will be held.

Also Tuesday, the Phi Kappa Theta National Fraternity headquartered in Chicago, issued a statement saying it was disappointed with its KU chapter.

“These actions are not in keeping with the ideals of our fraternity,” said Kevin Lampe, the national secretary of the fraternity. “The national fraternity will hold those who made bad and improper choices responsible for their actions.”

Lampe promised an investigation followed by swift discipline.

Late Saturday police went to the fraternity at 1111 W. 11th St. responding to a noise complaint. Officers saw men sitting at a table outside charging $5 per cup for unlimited beer. Police were told identifications were initially checked but then it became too crowded to check everyone’s age. Police cited seven people on municipal charges.
