Potawatomi Nation gives grant to Lied Center
The Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation in Mayetta has donated $20,000 to the Lied Center in support of Ping Chong’s “Native Voices, Secret History” project at the center.
Karen Christilles, Lied Center associate director, accepted the award Jan. 26 at the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation charitable contributions award ceremony.
Jim Garcia, charitable contributions committee coordinator for the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation, said the award was one of 27 charitable contributions given in the fourth quarter of 2004. The contributions committee makes donations to benefit projects that support educational programs, health and community services, the environment and religion.
The Lied Center and Haskell Indian Nations University are partners in the April presentation of experimental theater artist Ping Chong’s reader’s theater production. The script for “Native Voices, Secret History” is based on the personal stories and experiences of American Indians in the Lawrence community, as they are revealed through Chong’s oral history project.
