‘Meet’ offers light holiday fare

If you’re going to make a fake-looking and preposterous Christmas movie, you might as well go all the way. This appears to be the spirit behind “Meet the Santas” (8 p.m. today, Hallmark). A sequel to last year’s film “Single Santa Seeks Mrs. Claus” (6 p.m. today, Hallmark), this new offering stars Steve Guttenberg in the unlikely role of Santa Claus – or rather the latest in a long line of Santas – and Crystal Bernard (“Wings”) as Beth, a pensive single mother and the future Mrs. Claus.

The action takes place in Los Angeles or some sunny place far from the North Pole. There, Santa’s now-retired Dad has taken to the golf course and to wearing red or green jogging outfits, depending on his mood. We don’t see him and the former Mrs. Claus taking advantage of early-bird specials, but given the old man’s pillowy build, it’s easy to imagine them taking advantage of the all-you-can-eat buffet.

If planning for Christmas and organizing a wedding weren’t challenging enough, Santa and Beth have to navigate around Beth’s mother, Joanna (Mariette Hartley), an emotional glacier and all around snob. She’s fabulously wealthy and has no idea of her future son-in-law’s occupation. In fact, she thinks his parents are decidedly tacky.

“Meet” deserves credit for never taking itself seriously for a moment and never taxing viewers with the niceties of logic and consistency.
