“A lot of people have asked me, they say, ‘Did you edit anything out because you thought it was too dirty?’ The answer is yes. And here it is.”

That’s Judd Apatow, director and co-writer of “The 40-Year-Old Virgin,” providing commentary for one of several deleted scenes on the just-released DVD of this summer’s surprise hit. As Apatow promises, the unrated version of “Virgin” – which includes an extended edition of the movie with 17 minutes of additional footage – delivers its share of raunch, though not as much as the enticing “unrated” designation might have you believe.

At a running time of more than two hours, the longer film throws in a few new scenes here and there, the funniest and most provocative of which involves a porn star who speaks the thoughts of protagonist Andy Stitzer, played by the riotous Steve Carell. In terms of pure viewing enjoyment, the original, R-rated “Virgin” – also available on DVD and (no joke) recently selected by the American Film Institute as one of the top 10 films of the year – is a better, more briskly paced movie. But fans of this laugh-out-loud comedy may want to check out the unrated one anyway, if only for the additional chuckles it provides.

Some of the heartiest laughs on this DVD come from the bonus features, which include several extended and deleted scenes, all paired with commentary from Apatow and star Seth Rogen, as well as outtakes, a gag reel, a featurette about the cringe-inducing chest-waxing scene and an entertaining commentary track from Apatow, Rogen, Carell, Paul Rudd and several other members of the cast. It’s rare to find extras that elicit this much laughter, and that’s what makes “The 40-Year-Old Virgin,” in rated or unrated form, a comedy classic.

Most unrepeatable bonus: “Advice From Mooj” is an extended version of an uproarious scene in which one of Andy’s co-workers (played by Gerry Bednob) provides some romantic guidance that quickly turns obscene. It’s the moment that made me laugh the hardest … and I can’t repeat a single word of it on a family Web site.

Best Paul Rudd bonus: In yet another worthwhile deleted scene, the four central male characters share the stories of their first sexual encounters. Rudd’s is the least disgusting, but also the most amusing: “It was so short, it actually lasted negative time … I know because when we finished, Lincoln had just been shot.”
