Details sought in fatality

77-year-old died after crash at 19th and Mass.

Lawrence Police on Friday asked for help from anyone who may have witnessed a two-car accident Nov. 25. Two days later a Lawrence man who was involved in the wreck died.

Wesley Norwood, 77, died Sunday at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. He was transported to the hospital from the accident scene. He was one of the drivers in the two-car accident. A statement from police said Norwood died from the injuries he received, but it did not specify the type of injury.

Norwood’s son, Brian, said his father’s health was somewhat poor before the accident.

Wesley Norwood was a Douglas County district attorney until he entered private practice in 1963. He retired in 1993.

According to the accident report, Norwood was driving his 1992 Oldsmobile east on 19th Street at 10:12 a.m. At the same time, Donna Murphy, 57, Eudora, drove a 2005 Toyota Camry south on Massachusetts Street.

Wesley Norwood, who died Nov. 27, was a former Douglas County district attorney.

Police say their vehicles collided in the intersection. The accident report indicated police did not issue any tickets.

Wesley and Doris Norwood were transported to LMH by ambulance, and Murphy’s husband, Paul, took her home, according to the police report.

Police have no other witnesses to the accident.

“We figure that probably somebody saw it but didn’t realize the severity of the accident,” Ward said.

Brian Norwood, Norwood’s son, on Friday said he hoped any witnesses would step forward and help provide more details about the accident.

“It’s a big intersection. I can’t believe that nobody stopped,” he said.

Norwood also said his father’s death in the hospital two days after the accident was sudden.

Ward said police would like anyone who was in the area at the time of the accident on Nov. 25, or anyone who might have information related to the accident, to call the police department’s traffic unit at 832-7595.
