Traffic delays expected for KU and K-State games

Driving to a college football game this weekend?

State highway officials recommend giving yourself extra driving time because of construction projects on the way to the Kansas and Kansas State games in Lawrence and Manhattan.

The Kansas Department of Transportation also recommends being prepared for possible traffic congestion and delays.

“Regardless of the route, expect heavier than usual traffic on the roadways Saturday in northeast Kansas,” say KDOT officials.

For example, if you’re driving in from the west to see the KU game in Lawrence, you might run into delays along U.S. Highway 40 northwest of Lawrence. Construction is underway to expand U.S. 40 to four lanes from Kansas Highway 10 to Folks Road.

Along that route, speed limits are 40 mph, which could cause some delays.

If you’re heading to the K-State game in Manhattan, KDOT officials are recommending that drivers coming in from the east take Interstate 70 west either to Kansas Highway 99 to Wamego or K-177 to Manhattan.

That’s because bridge construction is underway on U.S. 24 about three miles east of Wamego with both directions of traffic controlled by a signal. Traffic could back up and take more than one cycle of the signal, so motorists should expect delays, according to KDOT.

For motorists traveling to Manhattan from the west, reconstruction of the K-18/K-113 (Seth Child Road) interchange has traffic reduced to one lane in each direction.

There will be full access to all the exits and entrances, but traffic could be slow because of the reduced lanes, according to KDOT.
