Sergeant indicted on child porn charges

? An Air Force computer security specialist based at Offutt Air Force Base south of Omaha has been indicted on a federal charge of producing child pornography.

Tech Sgt. Erik Dean Rabes, 44, of La Vista, Neb., was accused of producing child pornography in November 2000 while stationed at Colorado Springs, Colo.

He was arrested at his home and is being held in Sarpy County Jail in Papillion on a $1 million bond, according to a news release from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Rabes’ home was searched and his computer equipment seized in December on a state search warrant.

A unit spokeswoman, Army Lt. Col. Randi Steffy, confirmed Friday that Rabes is assigned to the U.S. Strategic Command, a joint service unit that oversees the nation’s nuclear arsenal and is responsible for defending U.S. interests in space.

“The Air Force takes any incident of alleged misconduct by any of its members seriously,” Steffy said, reading from a prepared statement. “Air Force officials are cooperating fully with civilian authorities to facilitate the investigative process.”

She said she couldn’t confirm whether Rabes had used any military computers for any of the alleged activities nor further address any specifics of the case.

The continuing military investigation could lead to military charges, but civilian jurisdictions had the lead in this case, she said.
