— With a newly hired lawyer at his side, Mayor Richard Daley was interviewed for two hours Friday by federal investigators looking into corruption at City Hall.

Asked if he considers himself a target of the investigation, Daley said, "No, I don't think so. They did not indicate."

Neither Daley nor federal prosecutors would describe what they discussed, although the mayor's office later said in a statement that the questions "related to city policies and procedures for hiring, promotion and certain city programs."

The government filed criminal complaints July 18 against Robert Sorich, Daley's longtime patronage chief and a family friend, and Patrick Slattery, another city personnel official. Sorich and Slattery are from the 11th Ward Democratic Organization, led by the mayor's brother John.

The hiring scheme, which allegedly involved sham job interviews and falsified documents, spanned the past 12 years and touched at least four of the largest City Hall departments, authorities said. Prosecutors charge that the Daley administration illegally doled out city jobs and promotions to reward campaign workers for the mayor and pro-Daley candidates.
