New Mexico A man accused of fatally shooting two police officers as they tried to pick him up for a mental health evaluation was charged Friday with four counts of murder, two for the deaths of the officers and two for another shooting the same day.
John Hyde, 48, was arrested near downtown Albuquerque about two hours after the officers were shot Thursday night. He was being held without bond Friday.
Choking back tears at a news conference, Police Chief Ray Schultz identified the slain officers as Michael King, 50, and Richard Smith, 47, both veterans with 20 years' experience and sons of retired Albuquerque policemen.
Their deaths were among five killings in Albuquerque on Thursday.
Earlier that evening, David Fisher, 17, and Garret Iversen, 26, were found dead at a motorcycle shop. Hyde was charged with two counts of murder and armed robbery, and Schultz said investigators were looking into possible connections to the fifth shooting - a state Department of Transportation worker was shot to death at his job site.
"We're not positively sure these crimes are related, but we are reasonably sure they are," Schultz said.
