Lawrence Police officers, from left, Eric Maack, and Trent McKinley, pause at New York Elementary around 9:30 a.m. Thursday morning as they and other officers were on the lookout for a missing 6-year-old child who was later found at the school.

Employees at New York School received a scare Thursday morning when a first-grader temporarily went missing but then resurfaced less than an hour later in the wrong classroom.

About 8:45 a.m., school employees noticed the boy was missing from his class group. Principal Nancy DeGarmo said the boy had been in the cafeteria moments earlier and was not with his class after they walked to the classroom to start the day.

After searching about 45 minutes and calling police, above, school officials found the boy had wandered into another room, where a teacher thought he could have been a recently added student. School officials believe the boy initially got separated from his class by accidentally going into the girls' bathroom.

DeGarmo said the school was reviewing procedures to ensure children don't get separated from classes and that teachers notify the office immediately if a child arrives who isn't on the class roster.
