Heavy rain - welcomed by gardeners and lawn enthusiasts - pelted the Lawrence area late Friday afternoon as a strong thunderstorm moved through in the span of an hour, leaving 50 Linwood homes without electricity.
Karla Olsen of Westar Energy said no customers in Lawrence lost power Friday, but, as of 10 p.m., the 50 customers in Linwood, on Kansas Highway 32, still had no power since it went out just after 6 p.m.
Battalion chiefs with Lawrence-Douglas County Fire & Medical said they transported one patient as a result of an accident that occurred about 5:30 p.m., during the storm, on Kansas Highway 10 east of Lawrence.
Lt. Doug Woods with the Douglas County Sheriff's Office said the female driver had minor injuries after her vehicle veered off the road and hit a large signpost just west of exit 1057 on K-10. The rain likely was a factor in the accident, he said. The victim's name was not immediately available.
6News meteorologist Tim Reith said the afternoon rain brought 1.11 inches to the area, which increased Friday's total to more than 1.5 inches after a dry week.
"It came down fast and hard, but we'll definitely take it," Reith said.
While forecasts indicated a possibility of more rain this weekend, Reith said this temperatures would likely remain lower with highs in the low 80s. He also said weekend rain could boost the area's total precipitation to above average for the month.
