Amtrak train strikes dump truck

An Amtrak passenger train struck a large dump truck at a crossing in rural Ventura County, Calif., late Friday, severely injuring two people in the truck but causing only minor injuries to train passengers, authorities said.

The collision occurred at 8:25 p.m. in Somis as Amtrak’s Pacific Surfliner headed south from Santa Barbara to San Diego. The train, which carried 240 passengers, slammed into the dump truck at a crossing near Somis Road and East Los Angeles Avenue and finally came to a stop after about a third of a mile, according to the Ventura County Fire Department and an Amtrak spokeswoman.

Initial reports were that the dump truck operators were severely injured and that one of them was possibly trapped inside the vehicle, Ventura County Fire Department Spokesman Joe Luna said. They were taken to the hospital and their condition was unavailable.

Vernae Graham, an Amtrak spokeswoman, said Pacific Surfliner No. 796 had left Santa Barbara shortly after 7 p.m. and had been expected to arrive in San Diego around midnight.

“We have reports of minor injuries to folks who were on the train,” Graham said. The train was being pushed by an engine car, not pulled. The front car was partly derailed in the collision, she said.

Emergency crews were still trying to account for all the train passengers shortly before 10 p.m., Luna said. By that time, emergency crews had treated 19 injured on scene.

Helicopter news footage showed the dump truck broken in half and lying twisted beside the train as scores of passengers stood outside and firefighters treated several victims.

“All of a sudden there was a lunge and we clearly plowed into something,” a passenger who identified herself only as Gloria told Los Angeles television station KCAL. “The train came to a stop, and everybody started checking if they were OK. : We’re all banged up, but we seem to be OK.”

Graham said those passengers who did not suffer injuries would be picked up by buses and taken to their final destination.
