Tip about gun leads to LHS search

Lawrence High School officials searched the building this morning after receiving a tip that a student had brought a gun to school.

No gun was found, Principal Steve Nilhas said. Officials talked to associates of the student and searched their cars.

“Upon further investigation, this student doesn’t attend Lawrence High on a regular basis, and hasn’t been here for some time,” Nilhas said. “But he has been seen in the area.”

Nilhas added: “He hasn’t been here for six weeks, basically. He’s truant.”

The search took place before school opened for the day, Nilhas said.

Nilhas did not further identify the student, except to say he wouldn’t be allowed on school grounds. Further investigation, he said, was turned over to Lawrence Police.
