Storms possible tonight, Thursday

Lawrence won’t see much blue sky today. But you can probably leave your umbrella home — the city is expected to be dry through the afternoon, says Jennifer Schack, 6News meteorologist.

“We have a dry day in the forecast. . . . I think we mainly just have the clouds today and mild temperatures,” Schack said. “We could pick up an isolated storm in the evening and during the overnight hours.”

At 8:45 a.m., Lawrence’s temperature was 66 degrees, with southeast winds 13 mph. Today’s high will reach 80 by late afternoon, with south winds 10-15 mph, she said.

Most of the storms moving into the region will stay off to the north and east of Lawrence, she said. Overnight, Lawrence’s temperature will fall to 60 degrees by Thursday morning, she said.

The National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center has put Lawrence and most of northeast Kansas under a “slight risk” area for severe weather for Thursday afternoon and Thursday evening, Schack said.

“Some of those storms could be strong, possibly severe tomorrow afternoon,” she said.

There’s also a chance of showers on Friday morning, with the low temperature falling to 56 degrees, she said. Friday’s high will climb to only 60, making for a cool end to the work week, she said.
