Thunderstorms brewing this afternoon

The Lawrence area is under a “slight risk” of severe weather through 7 a.m. Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center. But the main chance of any strong storms is this afternoon, says Jennifer Schack, 6News meteorologist.

“The main threat would be some large hail, if we do get severe weather,” Schack said.

Thunderstorms are also possible for the early evening, but they’re expected to move out of the area later tonight, Schack said.

At 8:45 a.m., the temperature in Lawrence was 62 degrees, with southerly 13-mph winds. A line of light rain was moving from the west into Lawrence, Schack said.

“Most of the precipitation is staying off to the north and the northwest of us,” she said. “We’re not going to see a lot of precipitation in the morning. But we do have a chance in the afternoon, with thunderstorms.”

Breezy conditions are also expected through the day, with winds from the south, 10 to 20 mph. Some strong gusts — up to 35 mph — are possible this afternoon, Schack said. Today’s high temperature will climb to 77 degrees.

Overnight, the temperature will fall to a low of 59 by early Tuesday morning, with winds 12-18 mph, Schack said. Tuesday’s high will be 80 degrees, with winds 15-20 mph under partly cloudy skies.

Wednesday’s early morning temperature will start out at 60 degrees and climb to 81 by Wednesday afternoon, with partly cloudy skies.
