Museum to share Lewis and Clark stories
The adventures of explorers Lewis and Clark will be discussed from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. April 13 at Watkins Community Museum of History, 1047 Mass. The event is for children ages 6 to 10.
The children will share in the heroic courage these men experienced on their expedition and make the face paint that Lewis gave to the American Indians as a gift. Participants will also create a unique dance rattle by using found objects as the American Indians once did.
Exploration play clothes are recommended. The fee is $8 for children of members of Douglas County Historical Society, $10 for nonmembers’ children and $5 for members of Lawrence Boys & Girls Club. To preregister, call 841-4109.
Orchestra to present season finale
The Lawrence Chamber Orchestra will present Spring Sinfonietta, its season finale concert, at 3 p.m. April 17 at Free State High School, 4700 Overland Drive.
Besides works performed by the 29-member orchestra, the concert will feature piano performances by Kyle Chauvin, winner of the chamber orchestra’s 2005 Young Musician Competition, and finalist Carol Liang.
The concert program also includes performances by young Suzuki string students from the Talent Education Studio of Lawrence.
The orchestra will open the concert with Rossini’s Overture to L’Italiana in Algeri. Chauvin will join the chamber orchestra in a performance of the 1st movement from Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 4 in G major, and Liang will perform as soloist for the 1st movement of Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 20 in D minor. Short pieces from Vivaldi and Handel will be performed by the student string groups with the chamber orchestra strings.
Tickets are $15 for all adults, $10 for students with identification, and $5 for children 12 and under. Advance tickets are available at the Lawrence Arts Center, 940 N.H.

Linen expert to have program at museum
Ferrol Lattin, a household linen expert, will present “Naughty and Nice Linens,” a program at Watkins Community Museum of History, 1047 Mass., at 2 p.m. April 16.
Lattin has a masters of arts degree in Public History, with a concentration in Archival Management, from the University of Arkansas in Little Rock. She will bring her collection of “fun linens” and discuss the difference between them and regular linens.
Vocal ensemble to perform at church
Octarium, a vocal ensemble from the Kansas City area, will perform at 7:30 p.m. April 22 at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 1234 Ky.
Donations are suggested.
Octarium will pay tribute to its mentors by performing some of their favorite unaccompanied choral pieces, including works by Victoria, William Byrd, Healey Willan and Benjamin Britten.

Emporia State to have writing workshop
The 20th Tallgrass Writing Workshop will be June 25-26 at Emporia State.
It is a weekend summer session that includes small group presentations by faculty, provides opportunity for discussion and personal consultations.
