- Two Kansas University students have been charged with setting fire to playground equipment. KU Police said the two students, John M. Gordon and Samuel J. Winslow, were caught about 1 a.m. Sunday using an accelerant to set fire to playground equipment at Stouffer Place family apartments near 19th and Iowa streets. According to a report, the small fire was put out with a fire extinguisher. Prosecutors formally charged them Monday with one count each of arson but didn’t oppose a request to let the two out of jail on their own recognizance.
Burglaries and thefts reported
- An Independence, Mo., man told Douglas County Sheriff’s officials someone took his $25,000 Buell motorcycle between Sept. 12 and Sept. 15 from the 1900 section of East 1450 Road.
- Someone took a USA Today newspaper vending machine valued at $575 from the 3100 block of Iowa Street. The incident happened between 3:30 a.m. Thursday and 3:30 a.m. Friday, according to a report.
- Hy-Vee, 3504 Clinton Parkway, is missing $3,171 in currency taken between July 2003 and July 2004, according to a report.
