Light rain possible this afternoon, dry in evening

Lawrence might still get some light rain this afternoon. But if you’re heading out to high school homecoming events tonight for Lawrence or Free State high schools, don’t worry about the weather — cloudy, but dry conditions are in the evening forecast, said Jennifer Schack, 6News meteorologist.

Schack said some heavy thunderstorms were developing in northern Franklin County early this afternoon, which might make their way to the southern part of Douglas County. Lawrence might get a sprinkle or a light shower from it, she said.

Although, temperatures had been expected to climb to a high of 86 by late this afternoon, Schack said that she expects them to stay closer to the 80-degree range this afternoon.

Free State faces Shawnee Mission Northwest at 7 tonight at Kansas University’s Memorial Stadium and LHS faces Shawnee Mission North at 7:30 tonight at Haskell Stadium. Schack said temperatures should be mild tonight, with cloudy skies.

The National Weather Service puts the chances for showers and thunderstorms at 20 percent this afternoon before 4 p.m. There is another chance for showers and thunderstorms between 1 a.m. and 1 p.m. Saturday.

Saturday afternoon’s skies will be mostly cloudy, bringing above-average temperatures through the weekend, Schack said.

Temperatures will start Saturday morning at 60 degrees, but will warm up to 90 by Saturday afternoon, she said.

Schack’s forecast for the 10 a.m. Saturday morning Sesquicentennial Parade through downtown Lawrence is for mostly cloudy skies, with the temperature about 70.

The temperature will drop to 63 by early Sunday morning, but will climb to a high of 91 by Sunday afternoon.

“It will be a little toasty Saturday through Monday,” Schack said.
