Site of fatal accident marked with hockey-stick cross

Family and friends of Andrew Weir gathered this weekend at the site of the car accident that took his life to plant a cross made of hockey sticks — an homage to the Kansas University freshman’s favorite sport.

Weir died Thursday night when his Chevrolet Blazer rolled over on Kansas Highway 10 just outside of Eudora in a single-car accident. The cause of the accident is unknown, but the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office said it intended to release the results of its investigation early this week.

Before the trip Saturday afternoon to K-10, roughly 20 people gathered at the Weir home in Shawnee to support the family and remember Weir’s life. Some of Weir’s friends pieced together a photo collage. Others worked on a version of the song “Stand by Me” to perform at the memorial service.

Jordan Miles, Weir’s cousin and roommate at KU, said it had been hard to accept Weir’s death.

“You grow up with a guy, and you’re looking forward to the future, and reaching milestones in life together — it’s going to be hard not to be able to talk to him,” Miles said. “I was in shock when I heard. I couldn’t believe it. I just wondered what I was going to do.”

A close-knit group of friends who attended Shawnee Mission North High School with Weir remembered him as a “beautiful person.” James Crump, who had known Weir since they were 6 years old, said Weir was “the coolest guy I’ve ever known.”

Crump recalled recent Frisbee-golf outings the friends had made to Rosedale Park in Kansas City, Kan.

“He was so good at everything he did,” Crump said. “He would come out to the course after not having played for a long time and drive the disc 20 yards further than any of us.”

Jimmy Goodrick, another high-school friend, said Weir inspired those around him.

“Whatever he was doing, he always tried to be the best,” Goodrick said. “. You couldn’t help but be the best person you could whenever you were around that kid.”

Services for Weir are being coordinated by Amos Family Funeral Home in Shawnee. A memorial service is scheduled for 10 a.m. Tuesday.
