LOYO show raises $4,000 for Lawrence mental health center

Nearly $20,000 worth of art was sold at the Lawrence Own-Your-Own Art Exhibition and Sale Sept. 25 through Oct. 3 at the Wakarusa Corporate Centre.

About $4,000 went to Bert Nash Community Mental Health Center, the beneficiary of the annual art-based charity fund-raiser. Work is sold at retail value, and the artists agree to donate 20 percent of their sales to Bert Nash.

Juror Edward Barr, director of the Mulvane Museum of Art in Topeka, served as juror for the show. He selected 104 area artists and about 150 pieces for the exhibition.

Artists earned more than $23,400 after art sales and cash awards. Fifty-five pieces were purchased; 41 of those pieces were bought by patrons who had pledged to spend a certain amount before seeing the show.

Sales were down from last year, when $27,000 worth of work sold. Diana Dunkley, member of the Lawrence Committee for the Advancement of the Visual Arts, which organizes the annual event, attributed the drop, in part, to lower-priced art.
