Storms to rumble in today

If you’re headed out this evening to the football showdown between Lawrence and Free State high schools, check the forecast — Lawrence could see some severe weather this afternoon and tonight.

“The main threat is large hail and damaging winds,” said Jennifer Schack, 6News meteorologist. “Any storms we see should come to an end by midnight.”

This morning, a warm front rolled into Lawrence about 4:30 a.m., bringing a humidity level of 90 percent and temperatures in the low 70s by 8:30 a.m.

“We’re left with a sticky morning,” Schack said. “It kind of feels like summer out there.”

Schack said most of the morning storms crossing Kansas were staying to the south and west of Lawrence and were slowly working off to the east.

“Everybody is staying dry here toward the northeastern part of the state,” she said.

Today’s high will be 77, with southerly winds 15 to 25 mph, gusting to 30 mph, she said.

As the cold front approaches this afternoon, widespread storms will develop ahead of it, she said. Lawrence is in the “slight” risk area for severe storms, she said.

“Some of those storms could be strong,” she said.

Those planning to go to the LHS-Free State game at 7:30 p.m. at Haskell Stadium should prepare for rain. The National Weather Service says there’s a 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms this afternoon and evening,

Overnight, the temperature will drop to a low of 51 by early Saturday morning. Then the clouds finally roll out and bring sunshine through the weekend to the Lawrence area, Schack said.

“It’s going to be great on Saturday and great on Sunday,” she said.

Saturday’s high will be 70, with westerly winds 10 to 15 mph under sunny skies. The temperature will drop to a low of 44 by early Sunday morning. Then Sunday’s temperature will climb to a high of 73.
