District attorney considering charges against Baldwin teen

Student posted plan for attack at Maple Leaf Festival

A Baldwin youth who wrote about committing suicide and harming others during the Maple Leaf Festival could still face criminal charges, Douglas County Dist. Atty. Christine Kenney said Monday.

Kenney said she had been waiting on reports from the Baldwin Police Department before making a final decision about filing charges against the 15-year-old boy. Kenney said she got the reports Monday and was reviewing them.

Police became concerned earlier this month when they learned that the boy had posted messages on a Web site that indicated he planned a suicidal incident using pipe bombs and firearms, possibly at the festival.

The boy is now in a mental health care facility receiving treatment.

Police were alerted to the Internet postings when a Lawrence youth saw them and told his parents. They called police.

The Baldwin boy had planned a diversion to draw police away from town while he committed his act. His plans included making a remote controlled device to set a grass fire and setting off explosive devices he wanted to place on police cars, Baldwin Police Chief Mike McKenna said.

“He is very intelligent,” McKenna said of the boy. “I wouldn’t question his ability to do anything.”

The boy wasn’t found to be in possession of weapons or explosive devices, however, McKenna said.
