Pregnant Roberts on bed rest

Toronto — A pregnant Julia Roberts was confined to bed last month after experiencing a series of early contractions.

So with two films coming out in early December — Mike Nichols’ “Closer” and “Ocean’s Twelve,” the Steven Soderbergh-directed sequel to 2001’s star-studded heist caper — Roberts is conducting phone interviews while contemplating her pregnancy.

The 37-year-old actress is expecting twins — a boy and a girl — in early January. Her doctors advised bed rest until her due date.

“I’m enormous,” she says. “Let me tell you something: My babies weigh 6 pounds each. That’s 12 pounds of just baby in me right now, and I still have miles to go before I sleep with them. They’re bionic. It’s pretty amazing.”

Conrad sentenced for crash

San Andreas, Calif. — Robert Conrad will have to spend six months under house arrest and complete alcohol counseling for his role in a drunken-driving accident that left another man seriously injured, a Calaveras County judge decided.

After Tuesday’s decision, the 69-year-old actor said, “The only thing I’m happy about is that the young man who was a part of this has had a complete recovery.”

Kevin Burnett was injured when Conrad’s car crashed head-on into his car after crossing the center divide on a highway near Arnold in March 2003.

Conrad’s blood-alcohol level was 0.22 percent, nearly three times the 0.08 percent limit, officers said.

The actor, who starred in the ’60s TV series “The Wild Wild West,” will pay more than $3,600 in fines and restitution and will serve five years’ probation.

Charles still racking honors

Cleveland — Less than six months after his death, Ray Charles may be more popular than ever with a movie about his life and a posthumously released album.

Now he is being recognized with an exhibit at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum. “The Genius of Ray Charles” exhibit opened Nov. 19, and a reception to celebrate the opening is planned for Wednesday.

Charles memorabilia is on loan from his Los Angeles studio/headquarters and includes electronic keyboards, a saxophone, sunglasses and a collection of awards. The exhibit, expected to remain through Labor Day, also includes video recordings of his performances.

“Ray was very gracious for anything done for him,” said Joe Adams, Charles’ friend and business manager of 47 years. “He fussed about it, but he loved it. This would have been meaningful to him, definitely. He was among the first people inducted into the Rock Hall, and he was very honored by that.”

Tyler spreads sobriety gospel

Boston — Rocker Steven Tyler served up turkey and a helping of advice on Thanksgiving at a substance abuse treatment center for women.

Tyler, frontman for Aerosmith, shared his own struggles with drugs and alcohol with the two dozen residents of Women’s Hope.

“If I can just tell them how good it is for me now, and that it is possible … then I’ve done my job,” said Tyler, who lives in the Boston area.

The 56-year-old singer, who has been clean for nearly 20 years, describes himself as “a living example” that addictions can be conquered.
