Sun making a brief appearance

After several cloudy days, the sun made an appearance this morning over Lawrence, bringing unseasonably high temperatures this afternoon.

“The sunshine is returning briefly,” Jennifer Schack, 6News meteorologist, said shortly before noon. Partly cloudy skies will bring this afternoon’s high temperature up to 73, Schack said. The average high for this date is 53.

But the sunshine will be fairly brief — isolated showers are expected to roll in tonight, Schack said.

“We see the chances for some steady rainfall tomorrow,” she said. A cold front will move into Lawrence on Thursday morning, with the chances of rain going up through the afternoon, she said.

The National Weather Service said that the chance for rain is 70 percent tonight, 90 percent Thursday and 70 percent on Thursday night.

Thursday’s morning low will be 54, with the high climbing to 57 on Thursday afternoon.

The chance for rain continues on Friday, with cloudy skies, a morning low of 48 and a high of 54. The National Weather Service said the chance for rain is 50 percent on Friday.

For the weekend, Lawrence might get a taste of winter — Schack said there’s a slight chance for a mix of rain and snow on Saturday night
