New York Children are offered a glimpse of what their lives might have been like a century ago in two new TV movies that make their debut Thanksgiving week. One features the American Girl character Samantha, the other Pollyanna.
"Samantha: An American Girl Holiday" follows the life of an orphan raised by her wealthy grandmother in 1904 in Mount Bedford, N.Y. She befriends Nellie, a servant at the house next door, and together they navigate their different worlds.
Samantha is played in the live-action movie by AnnaSophia Robb with Kelsey Lewis playing Nellie and Mia Farrow in the role of Grandmary. It airs Nov. 23 on the WB network with an encore showing Nov. 25.
"Pollyanna" is the tale of a young girl who always sees her glass half full.
In this adaptation of Eleanor H. Porter's 1913 book, Pollyanna, played by Georgina Terry, spends a good deal of time playing "the glad game" -- a contest to find something about everything to be glad about.
Masterpiece Theatre presents "Pollyanna" Nov. 28 on PBS.
