Kansas University

Flu vaccinations available for students

The Watkins Health Center at Kansas University will begin offering its supply of flu vaccinations today.

The center has about 700 doses of the vaccine this year, down from about 3,000 in past years. Because of the nationwide shortage, only those in “priority groups” designated by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will receive vaccines. Those include people with chronic medical conditions, people over age 65, health-care workers and pregnant women.

The vaccination schedule is:

  • 10 a.m.-4 p.m. today and 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Wednesday, students in priority groups.
  • 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Thursday, students, faculty and staff in priority groups.
  • 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Friday, students, faculty and staff in priority groups.

Cost for vaccination is $15 for a shot and $25 for intranasal FluMist. KUIDs are required for vaccinations.

County

Commission to consider mailbox regulations

Massive roadside mailboxes may soon be a thing of a past in unincorporated parts of Douglas County.

Commissioners will begin discussing a possible resolution Wednesday that would require people to keep mailboxes away from county roads. Commission Chairman Charles Jones said that commissioners wouldn’t take action on the matter Wednesday, but would discuss it and set up times for public hearings.

“We try to keep the area between the edge of the road and road ditches free of big obstacles because people slide off the roads or run off the roads and we don’t want them to hit something that is going to kill them,” Jones said. “There are a number of mailboxes around in the county that are huge, made out of concrete or steel, that if someone hit with a car, they would be seriously injured. It’s not appropriate in that place and we’re going to put a regulation together to address those issues.”
