Ryun files for re-election

? Voicing support of President Bush’s policies in Iraq and the economy, U.S. Rep. Jim Ryun, a Republican from Lawrence, today filed for re-election.

“I don’t feel like my work has been completed. There is still much to do,” said Ryun, who is seeking a fifth term to represent the 2nd congressional district, which includes western Lawrence.

Ryun said he wants to make permanent several tax cuts set to expire in January.

Ryun said that tonight President Bush will reassure Americans in a televised speech that the administration is “moving in the right direction” in Iraq.

“I believe we are,” Ryun said. “If you don’t take the war to the terrorists, the terrorists will bring the war to you.”

He said setting up a representative form of government in Iraq will make the United States and Middle East more secure.

So far, Ryun faces no Republican opposition in the Aug. 3 primary. Nancy Boyda, a Democrat from Topeka, has filed to run to represent the district.
