Hit-and-run suspect has three DUIs
Lawrence resident's bond set at $50,000; pedestrian suffers cuts, bruises
A man with three prior drunken-driving convictions has been charged with driving a sport utility vehicle onto a sidewalk Monday night and hitting a pedestrian while driving drunk.
Prosecutors on Wednesday charged Jeffrey D. Carlson, 31, Lawrence, with offenses including felony DUI, aggravated battery and leaving the scene of an accident. At Carlson’s first court appearance, Assistant Dist. Atty. Brandon Jones said Carlson had a blood-alcohol level more than twice the legal limit of .08.
Jones asked a judge to set Carlson’s bond at $100,000, citing his past convictions and an Overland Park address as two reasons.
“The state feels he is a great risk to society,” Jones said. “He’s not from this county, so the state feels there’s not a good likelihood he would return to court.”
But after Carlson told District Court Judge Pro Tem Peggy Kittel he recently moved to Lawrence and works two jobs here, Kittel set bond at $50,000. Carlson remained in jail Wednesday night.
The wreck happened shortly before 10 p.m. Monday in the 1500 block of West 23rd Street. The pedestrian, 22-year-old Natasha Gilbert of Lawrence, was taken by ambulance to Lawrence Memorial Hospital.
She suffered cuts and bruises to her face, said Sgt. Mike Pattrick, a Lawrence Police spokesman, but she was treated at the hospital without being admitted.
Pattrick said Carlson left the scene, but police found his Jeep Cherokee in the area and arrested him.
Under state law, DUI becomes a felony on the third offense. Fourth-time DUI is punishable by at least 90 days and up to one year in prison and a fine of at least $1,500, Kittel said.
