CASA playhouse drawing Sunday

A Japanese-inspired playhouse is the centerpiece of this year’s Douglas County Casa 4 CASA benefit.

Those who donate to the Douglas County CASA program have a chance to win the playhouse, which will be displayed today at Wal-Mart, 3300 Iowa, and Sunday in front of the Douglas County Courthouse, 1100 Mass.

A drawing at 5 p.m. Sunday will determine the recipient of this year's CASA house. Jack Hope of Jack Hope Design/Build created this year's Japanese-theme playhouse.

CASA, or Court Appointed Special Advocates, helps abused or neglected children find safe homes to live in. Each year the program has a fund-raiser, called Casa 4 CASA, that features a playhouse built by local designers and architects.

For this year’s fund-raiser, Jack Hope of Jack Hope Design/Build, 1440 N. Third St., was chosen to build the playhouse.

Hope and his wife, Nancy, are interested in Japanese art and cultures. Nancy Hope works in the East Asian studies department at Kansas University, and Jack Hope said he was fond of Japanese architecture.

Jack Hope also worked with Sven Alstrom of Ecological Architecture, 842 W. 21st St., in designing the playhouse. Alstrom said he looked up building styles of Kokoro, a region of Japan, for design influences for the playhouse.

Suggested donations of $1 will buy one ticket for the playhouse drawing; $5 buys eight tickets and $10 buys 20 tickets. The winning ticket will be drawn at 5 p.m. Sunday in front of the courthouse.
