Kansas University’s debate team advanced to the Sweet 16 at the Cross Examination Debate Assn. national championship tournament at the University of Kentucky at Louisville.

After two days of matches between more than 200 teams, the top 65 squads advanced to a single elimination tournament similar to the NCAA basketball tournament.

Kansas had two pairs competing. Sophomores Matt Cormack, Lincoln, Neb., and Lindy Simonsen, Omaha, Neb., advanced to the Sweet 16, where they were defeated by California State University at Fullerton. Seniors Todd Jordan, Lenexa, and Jordan Tinsley, Little Rock, Ark., lost in the second round.

KU also placed sixth overall at the National Sweepstakes Awards.

KU will conclude its debate season next weekend at the National Debate Tournament in Washington, D.C.
