Lawrence artists draw national attention

A collection of landscape paintings by Lawrence husband and wife John Hulsey and Anne Trusty has been getting national attention since it went on view at the Albrecht-Kemper Museum of Art in St. Joseph, Mo.

Interested parties from as far away as New York, Los Angeles and San Diego attended the opening reception of “The Forces of Nature,” which includes about 40 oils and watercolors by the duo.

Both artists studied at Kansas University and the Kansas City Art Institute and later moved to New York. They returned to Lawrence in 1990.

The exhibition will be on view through April 10. Hours are 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Tuesday-Friday and 1 p.m.-4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. For more information, call the museum at (816) 233-7003.

Scanographer to show work in downtown space

An exhibition of new works by Lawrence artist Bill Bowerman will open with a reception at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at Eangee Home Design, 1005 Mass.

The show includes more than 25 scanographs — photographs made using a scanner instead of a camera — drawings and acrylic paintings. It will remain on view through April 7.

A slide show of artworks will be on display throughout the reception, from noon to 6:30 p.m.

Bowerman will give gallery talks at 2 p.m., 3:30 p.m. and 5 p.m. He is a past president of the Lawrence Art Guild.

Time for a ‘yart’ sale

The East Lawrence Neighborhood Assn. will have its fourth annual “Yart Sale” from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday in the New York School gym, 936 N.Y.

The sale features “junk, junk, glorious junk,” as well as baked goods and original, affordable artwork. All proceeds will benefit the New York School, the neighborhood association’s workday, the neighborhood block party and the Hobbs Park mural project.

The neighborhood association will accept donated items and baked goods for the sale from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday in the gym. Tables are available on a first-come, first-serve basis for artists who want to sell their work. Artists are asked to donate 10 percent of the profits to the association.

Local metal artist wins Niche Award

Lawrence resident Kelvin Schartz was selected as a winner at the 2004 NICHE Awards Feb. 15 in Philadelphia. The awards are sponsored by NICHE magazine, the exclusive trade publication for North American retailers of American crafts.

Schartz operates Celestial Iron Works, 619 N. Second St., a company that creates ornaments for home and garden using recycled steel.

Schartz’s piece “Prairie Wall Clock” was honored in the award contest’s clocks category.

The NICHE Awards program began in 1990 to recognize outstanding creative achievements of American craft artists who produce work for galleries and retail stores.

Lawrence students perform solo at festival concert

Two Lawrence junior high school students performed at a March 14 honors recital at Washburn University’s White Concert Hall.

Horn player Ben Smith, a student at Central Junior High, performed “Rondino” by Cecil Effinger. South Junior High school student Evan Hunter played “Concert Etude,” a trumpet solo by Alexander Goedicke.

The recital concluded the annual junior high and middle school solo festival sponsored by the Washburn University College Music Educators National Conference. The solo contest featured 500 students from 35 schools. Only students receiving a superior rating were invited to perform at the recital.

New York string ensemble to perform in Baldwin

The International Sejong Soloists, a New York chamber music group, will perform at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Baldwin First United Methodist Church.

The all-string ensemble, composed of 14 members from eight countries, has received critical acclaim for both its fresh interpretations of standard musical literature and its willingness to experiment with contemporary compositions. Artistic director Hyo Kang leads the eclectic group.

Cost is $15 for adults and $12 for youth ages 13-19. Students under 12 are admitted free when accompanied by an adult.

Casting call set for Baldwin theater show

Baldwin Community Theatre has announced audition dates for the June 9-13 production of “Big River: The Adventures of Huck Finn.”

Auditions will be from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Baldwin Junior High School, 400 Eisenhower, with callbacks slated from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. March 28.

National music conference comes to Kansas City, Mo.

The 2004 Music Teachers National Assn. National Conference will be March 27-March 31 at the Kansas City Convention Center and Kansas City Marriott in downtown Kansas City, Mo.

The conference, which aims to provide an opportunity for professional development for independent and collegiate music teachers and students, is free to the public.

Events include educational sessions, master classes, concerts, national student competition winners’ recitals and performances by guest artists.

Coterie Theatre announces youth auditions

The Coterie Theatre will have youth auditions for its 2004-2005 season from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday and from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. March 29.

The auditions are for children ages 12-19 and will take place at the theater, 2450 Grand Ave., Kansas City, Mo. All students in the metropolitan area with an interest in the performing arts, regardless of experience, are encouraged to attend.

Participants at the open call auditions should prepare a one-minute, memorized monologue of a character close to their own age. Students are also asked to bring a resume and recent photograph.
