Lawrence resident meets Bush at White House

Lawrence resident Scottie Lingelbach received a surprise, personal tour of the White House from President Bush last week while she was in Washington, D.C., attending World War II Memorial events.

Lingelbach attended the memorial ceremony as a guest of NBC newsman Tom Brokaw and stayed with Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Gen. Richard Myers and his wife, Mary Jo. Lingelbach was featured in Brokaw’s 1998 book, “The Greatest Generation.”

Lingelbach said she went with the Myerses to a breakfast at the White House attended by members of the president’s Cabinet. Although President Bush was not at the breakfast, Lingelbach said she had a chance encounter with him in one of the hallways. Lingelbach was introduced to him by Myers and then taken by the president to see a few rooms.

“He put his arm around me and said, ‘Come on, I want to show you something,'” Lingelbach recalled. “Afterward he said, ‘Well, I guess I better get back to work.'”

Lingelbach served with the Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service during World War II and worked with the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
