Lawrence couple to portray Cordleys

As part of Lawrence’s Chautauqua celebration next month, a Lawrence couple will portray the Rev. Richard Cordley and his wife, Mary. Richard Cordley was an outspoken abolitionist and leader in the Free State movement.

Harold and Donna Riehm will perform at 9:30 a.m. Sunday, June 27 during the morning service at Plymouth Church, where Richard Cordley served as pastor for 38 years during the late 1800s.

Harold Riehm, a member of the Lawrence Chautauqua Planning Committee, will portray the pastor circa 1904, shortly before his death. The performance will relate Cordley’s involvement in the founding of Lawrence, housing a runaway slave, Quantrill’s Raid and the 1870 construction of Plymouth Church.

Richard Cordley was a nationally recognized pastor and writer whose home burned to the ground during Quantrill’s Raid in 1863. Some say he was a primary target because of three sermons he’d delivered in Kansas City, Mo., just before the raid.
